On
Saturday, May 13, as letter carriers deliver mail, they will pick up
non-perishable food donations left at customers’ mailboxes. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary
of the food drive. For 25 years, our postal employees and our customers
have demonstrated their generosity by supporting the National Association of
Letter Carriers’ National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Last
year’s drive resulted in carriers collecting a record 80.1 million pounds of
food from local communities around the country, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US
Virgin Islands. Since the program began in 1993, employees and customers have
contributed 1.5 billion pounds of non-perishable food. The food drive has
become the nation’s largest one-day campaign to collect food for distribution
to needy families.
The
food will be collected and delivered to local food banks. Employees can participate by leaving food at
their mailboxes, or by placing food in bins at Post Offices.
Suncoast
District employees have been instrumental in the Food Drive’s success in past
years. By supporting this year’s Food Drive,
we can once again make a huge difference for those who depend on local food
banks to feed their families.
