Deland Postmaster Janice Walters (right) presented Letter Carrier Steve Van Ness (left) with a Certificate of Appreciation after he noticed mail piling up at a customer’s home. Steve contacted police to stop by the home to conduct a welfare check. Local authorities found the family’s pet cat was locked up with no food or water. A miscommunication resulted in no one taking care of the family’s cat while they were away. The very grateful homeowners credited Steve with saving their precious cat’s life.
