The National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC’s) 26th annual “Stamp
Out Hunger” Food Drive is this Saturday, May 12.
Nearly 49 million Americans — 1 in 7 — are unsure of the source of their
next meal. This includes 12 million children, as well as about 7 million
seniors over age 60 — many of whom live on fixed incomes and often are too
proud to ask for help.
Last year, Postal
carriers collected 75.3 million pounds of food, feeding an estimated 30 million
families. Total donations have surpassed 1.6 billion pounds of food since the
food drive started. Donated food goes to local food banks for distribution.
The Stamp Out Hunger
Food Drive comes at an especially important time for our country’s school
children and their families. Millions rely on school breakfast and lunch
programs. Once the school year ends, those programs end. The Stamp Out Hunger
Food Drive helps to close that gap.
Employees can donate by
leaving food at their mailboxes or placing them in bins on the workroom floor
at postal facilities. Non-perishable food donations requested include canned
goods, cereal, rice, beans and pasta.
