Rural Carrier Tomiko Bennett

Haines City, FL,
Rural Carrier Tomiko Bennett loves working for the Postal Service and has from
day one in March 2015. “My coworkers have always treated me like family,” she
says.
“Our first priority
is the customer. We do whatever we can as far as protocol and following the
Post Office policies to make sure we treat our customers like they are number
one because they are. We want to make them happy.”
Besides USPS, Bennett
also has a love for music. “I went to college for music; I’m both a musician
and singer,” she says. “I’ve recorded songs, and I’m always writing music."

With all the recent events happening in the world, including COVID- 19 and the elections which have thrust the Postal Service into the spotlight, Bennett decided to write and record a song about the organization. She even recruited some members of her postal family – Retail Clerk Minnie Ingram, Rural Carrier Associate Enya Farmer and Rural Carrier Mayra Torres – to help with the vocals. Her six-year-old son,
Elisha, helped too. “Everyone was excited to be part of the project even though
they had never been in a studio before,” she says with a smile
Bennett calls it pop
rap genre. “I chose this style because I rap myself with my other songs,”
explains Bennett. “But I wanted to do something like this because it’s catchy
and you can dance to it. It’s a motivator. We are a family just like the song’s
title. Once I got the beat, it took me about three days to write it and several
hours to record."

“The Lord gave me the
song because I want everyone to know we’re doing our job and doing whatever we
can whether it’s rain, snow, hurricanes and other emergency situations,” she
says. “I remember a few
years ago when a hurricane hit Haines City and we didn’t have any power. We
still came in with our flashlights and management set up generators so we could
sort mail. We were there; dedicated to our customers.”
(When I was writing) “I thought about the people up North
who deliver mail in the snow and cold weather,” she adds. “The Postal Service
is made up of excellent and caring employees.”

Bennett researched postal history and enlisted the help of
a friend for the beat. (When it was finished), “I told my co-worker that this
wasn’t going to be my song, this is a Postal Service song,” she says. “Every
employee is important, and this song is for everyone.”
