St. Petersburg, Open
Air Station Letter Carrier Oria Allen (pictured above) leaves the Post Office
to begin her route.
Think about it. For over 100 years, St. Petersburg letter carriers
have used bikes to dispatch letters and packages around the downtown area. Some may see it as a leftover from a bygone
era, a time when milk was delivered door-to-door. But it’s not much different than today's online
food ordering companies and retailers.
Open Air Station has been listed on the National Register of
Historic places since 1975. The Mediterranean Revival building with a highly
ornamental design is a downtown landmark located in the heart of St.
Petersburg.
Open Air Station was dedicated in September 1917. It is nation’s
first open-air post office and has been in continuous operation since it opened
for business.
