2 Marketing Manager Sanja Reeves, Orlando Postmaster Diane Tindle,
Congresswoman Val Demings and family members of the late Police Officer Robert
German.
Friends and family of fallen
Police Officer Robert German gathered at the Windermere Post Office last month to
honor his memory during a special dedication ceremony.
“It is our privilege to join
Officer German’s family to remember his strength, courage and commitment as we
dedicate the Windermere Post Office in his honor,” said Orlando Postmaster
Diane Tindle, who represented Florida 2 District at the solemn event.
Officer
German was shot and killed in the line of duty in March 2014. Congresswoman
Val Demings (D-FL) introduced legislation for the dedication in November 2019.
It was signed into law by President Donald Trump in December 2020.
“Officer
Robert German was known for his spirit of service and his commitment to his
community. He served Windermere honorably for five years, turning down other
opportunities in order to stay in the community he loved. I believed that it
was fitting for his sacrifice and his love for Windermere to be recognized,”
said Demings, prior to the event.
Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden, who also spoke,
said it was important to keep Officer German’s legacy alive. “Today is just yet
another day we get to see the community honor a hero and remember his wonderful
legacy,” he said.
According to Tindle, the
distinction of having a Post Office dedicated in your honor is reserved for a select
group of individuals. “The Postal Service has more than 31,000 retail officers.
Of those, less than 900 are dedicated in honor of an individual,” she added.
A portrait
of Windermere Police Officer Robert German was on display during the dedication
ceremony.
Members
of the Windermere Police Department, it’s Honor Guard Unit and the Ocoee Police
Department Honor Guard Unit honor the memory of fellow officer Robert German.
