National Dog Bite Awareness Week gets underway next month and Tampa Forest Hills Station Letter Carrier Juan Andujar is ready.
Although he's never endured a dog bite in his seven years of carrying mail, Andujar has on separate occasions had three dogs come at him.
"If you show fear to a dog, it's probably going to attack," he said. "However, when you stand strong, usually they harass you but don't come any closer."
One tactic that's worked for Andujar is to make noise. "I will jingle my keys, holler out 'The mailman is here,' and honk the horn on my truck," he said. "Usually when dogs hear sound, they interact and that will give you plenty of time to be aware of any dogs that are around."
