District Manager Eric Chavez issued a Direct Line to all Suncoast District
employees thanking them for their ongoing support of The National Association
of Letter Carriers’ (NALC’s) “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. Suncoast District employees have shown
tremendous support of the food drive, earning the #1 spot in the nation for the
most food collected for the last nine years.
Nearly 49 million Americans — 1 in 7 — are unsure of the source of their
next meal. This includes 12 million children, as well as about 7 million
seniors over age 60 — many of whom live on fixed incomes and often are too
proud to ask for help.
Last year, active and
retired letter carriers, with help from thousands of volunteers as well as
NALC’s national partners, collected 75 million pounds of food, bringing the
25-year grand total to almost 1.6 billion pounds. The food donations are delivered to local
food banks.
The top requested non-perishable food items are: cereal, pasta, pasta sauce
or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as
soups, chili and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese,
canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey), beans (canned or dry). Healthy, low-sodium, low-sugar items such as
beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil, are also
requested.
Suncoast District employees can once again help families in their
communities who are in need. Employees
can help by bringing non-perishable food donations to your work location, or by
leaving non-perishable items at your mailbox on Saturday, May 12.
“Thank you to each and
every employee who supports the Food Drive. Together we are making a huge
difference in our communities” said Chavez.
