Truly A Team Effort

Orlando P&DC employees Lorrie Smith (left) and Joyce Wolfe (right) teamed up to track down a pair of unaddressed envelopes.

Recently, an urgent call went out to the Orlando Processing & Distribution Center Letter Inquiry Team about some unaddressed envelopes that were mistakenly entered into the mailstream.

“I am attempting to help a customer, who had some white legal-size envelopes (not addressed or stamped), picked up from her office by a carrier,” read the email from Malabar, FL, Postmaster Karen Dykes. “Any assistance in retrieving these would be greatly appreciated.”

The envelopes, which contained checks, were accidentally included with the business’s other outgoing mail, according to Dykes.

When Tour 3 Data Collection Tech Lorrie Smith saw the inquiry, she notified Mail Processing Clerk Joyce Wolfe, who sometimes assists the review clerk. Within 15 minutes, Wolfe located the envelopes, bearing only a handwritten name on the outside.

“All of In-Plant Support assists in trying to locate missing or delayed pieces, items that have fallen out in processing, bank envelopes mailed in error – you name it,” said Smith. “Of course, some items require the assistance of the review clerks and Mailhandlers in patch up. But thankfully, this inquiry was immediate which made it much easier to find.”

Wolfe, a 36-year postal veteran, said it makes her feel good when she’s able to reunite items with customers. “I, myself, have dropped letters into the mailstream without a stamp, so I know first-hand how it feels,” said Wolfe.

Dykes was elated to hear the envelopes had been found. “We have amazing employees working for the USPS,” she said.

“We process around 378,000 letters a day on average,” said Smith. “One of the best parts of the job is when we can reunite a missing item or mailpiece with the rightful owner.”

THANK YOU, ORLANDO P&DC. You make us all look good!
