St. Petersburg Open Air Station Letter Carrier Oria Allen
has made it part of her daily routine to read the safety bulletin board at her
unit. “It’s easy to have accidents on the job, so I have to be mindful of
slips, trips and falls while performing my duties,” she said. “I need my job as
I have a 10-year-old, and safety is very important because of your health.”
Allen has been delivering mail on a bicycle since 2014. “I
love it. It’s fun,” she said. “Tourists who aren’t from this area or carriers
who are here on vacation stop and want to take a picture.”
When Ed Donato (above) got out of the Navy, he was told two
things – go to the unemployment office and go to the Post Office. “I did both,”
he laughed. And the rest is history.
Donato was hired as a clerk at the Main Post Office in
Philadelphia at 30th and Market Streets, where he worked for five years before
transferring to Florida. He now runs the box section at Open Air Station in St.
Petersburg.
“Automation is good, but I still have to look through the
mail for accountable mail that’s supposed to be signed for,” he said. “Other
mail per section should be in each section. But it’s not sometimes, so then I
have to case it.”
St. Pete Letter Carrier
LaTiana Miller (above) recently prepared mail for her route. Miller has been
carrying for five years and what she likes most about her job are the people.
“I love my customers,” she said.
Sometimes, Miller said
her friends will razz her about delivering mail. “They don’t understand how I
can work outside all day with the heat,” she laughed. “But I’m a Florida girl,
born and raised.”
