Every October, employees at Fort Myers Page Field Station wear pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
"We've always marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month to support employees who've had cancer and beat it," says Letter Carrier and Union Steward Ossie Brown (below kneeling, second from right). "And we honor employees who passed away from cancer, including one as recently as November."
Last month, employees decided to wear red on Fridays during December to show support for the nation’s military.
Brown’s idea gained support from 90 percent of the employees at his unit. He contacted his friend, Marty Grace, a former letter carrier for 22 years and a shirt design business owner.
"Everyone in the office wore the shirts," says Brown, a 28-year postal veteran. "Red Shirt Day signified support for our military veterans, and the red shirts were also festive for the holiday season."
The shirts featured the USPS website on the back and were a hit in the office and with customers. "The shirts got employees excited because it was something different and because of peak season," adds Brown.
"We were the only station in Fort Myers to wear red shirts in December," says Brown. "Maybe next year employees at other stations and Post Offices will wear the shirts to honor the military as well!"
